Things That Surprise People on Polymarket

Wording that decides outcomes, capital stuck after the event is over, and the security rules that are absolute. The catch-out list in one place.

A smooth road with one small raised ridge

Collected from the places people most often get caught. Every item is knowable in advance; none of them is hidden.

The resolution criteria are the contract, not the title

The title is a summary written to be readable. The criteria are what the oracle applies. Where they differ, the criteria win. On any market you would be annoyed to lose on a technicality, read them first. How resolution works.

Vague wording is a real risk, priced or not

Words like "officially", "confirmed" and "announced" carry more weight than they look like they do. A market at 96 on a woolly question is not offering 4%. Disputes.

The event ending is not the position ending

After close there is a proposal, a challenge window and possibly a dispute vote. Your capital stays committed through all of it. The market lifecycle.

Winnings need redeeming

Settled positions do not always turn themselves into a balance. Check for unredeemed positions; forgotten ones sit indefinitely.

No fee does not mean no cost

Where there is no explicit trading fee, the cost lives in the spread instead. It is larger than most fee schedules, and it is invisible because nothing itemises it. Fees and gas.

A grid of circles with one offset from the rest
The one that is different is usually the wording.

Nobody legitimate asks for your seed phrase

Not the venue, not support, not a data site, not this one. Any request is an attack, in every context, with no exception. This site reads public prices only and never connects to a wallet.

Token approvals persist

Granting a contract permission to spend is a standing authorisation that outlives the trade that needed it. Review and revoke periodically.

Thin markets produce numbers that are not prices

A book with no offers, or thirty contracts at the top, will still render a number on a screen. That number is not a probability and a gap computed from it is not a gap. Gap size versus liquidity.

Outcomes in one set are not independent

A candidate field is one distribution. Holding three of them is one position with a known combined payoff. Multi-outcome markets.

The same question elsewhere may not be the same question

A regulated venue applies a filed rule; here the wording is the rule. Different deadlines, different sources, different tie handling. A price difference that reflects a genuine difference in the contract is not an error, which is why this site attaches an equivalence grade to every pair and calls what it finds a theoretical cross-market edge rather than a return. Resolution differences.

Why two venues disagree — the beginning of the cross-market category.

Educational content only. Nothing here is financial advice, a solicitation, or an offer to trade. Prediction markets can move against you and a position can lose its entire value. Where this guide describes a difference between venues it describes a theoretical cross-market edge in observed prices, which is not a profit: fees, spreads, capital lockup, transfer time and differing settlement rules all come out of it first.
